Research design: A survey was used to compare and investigate the relationship between the game design elements and motivational factors. Additionally, a study based on the Self-Determination Theory was conducted to analyze the influence of intrinsic motivation on learning outcomes. Both empirical studies were conducted with a sample of 446 users of an educational game on virtual reality.
Results: The narrative experience of the game affects the level of perceived engagement and enjoyment. However, it has no effect on the perceived challenge. The aesthetics of the game affect the perceived challenge, but it has no effect on the perceived level of engagement. The game design elements that affect the perceived level of challenge are game mechanics and aesthetics. Game mechanics can affect the perceived level of challenge and engagement while aesthetics can affect the perceived level of engagement.
Conclusions: The narrative experience of the game has an indirect effect on the perceived challenge level. Player goals, personality traits and learning styles can be used to identify the characteristics of a particular user group and the type of game design that is most suitable for them.

Game designers should be mindful of all the different motivations that players may have and design the game to take advantage of these different motivations (Keller 2002). In the context of learning game applications, each of the goals that the player sets for himself could be considered as a motivational construct. The more that player sets a goal for himself, the more intrinsic motivation he experiences. This however is only true as long as the player believes that he can achieve that goal. If he does not believe that, or has the impression that he cannot reach it, then he may not experience intrinsic motivation towards the goal. On the other hand, if the player sets a goal that is not feasible, or if he believes that he cannot achieve it, then he is likely to experience extrinsic motivation towards the goal.
